Wine Auctions
Thu, 16/10/08 – 1:57 | No Comment

You might think a good bottle of wine is meant to be opened and enjoyed especially at a special event, but there are many people who consider buying a good bottle or better yet a whole case in itself the special event and have no intentions of ever opening or drinking it.  These unusual people are known as wine collectors and for them the thrill is in the chase.  Of course, most of them enjoy a good glass of wine now and then, but their very best bottles and cases are reserved for their collections.

So, how does a wine collector find these rare treasures?  They usually are found at a wine auction.  Collectors come from all over the world to inspect and bid on rare bottles and cases of wine.  A wine may be rare because it wasn’t produced for very long, because it is very old or because it came from an obscure winery that is no longer in business.  Some wines are deliberately produced in very small quantities to appeal to collectors and someday be sold at wine auctions.

These days wine auctions, like everything else, have even begun to be held online.  Collectors must do their research and should only participate in online wine auctions with a good reputation.  A word-of-mouth referral from another collector is the best way to know if an online wine auction is legitimate.  You will want to know what special precautions they will use to ship your rare vintage of wine so that it arrives in mint condition.

Buying from one of these auctions is a much more affordable way for the average person to begin collecting wine since they do not have to travel to Europe to find the most aged and rare vintages.  Finding an unusual wine can be a fun and enjoyable hobby and a wine auction is a great way to start your collection.
